Why Preserving LGBTQ+ History Matters and How You Can Help
Preserving LGBTQ+ history is crucial for understanding the past, celebrating the present, and shaping a more equitable future. By documenting and sharing the stories of LGBTQ+ individuals and communities, we can challenge stereotypes, inspire future generations, and ensure that the contributions of LGBTQ+ people are recognized and valued.
However, preserving LGBTQ+ history presents unique challenges. Many historical records and artifacts have been lost or destroyed due to discrimination, stigma, and a lack of institutional support. The AIDS epidemic in particular resulted in the destruction of personal histories as the families of people with AIDS sometimes erased the queer legacies of their children. At the best of times, oral histories and personal narratives, which are often essential for understanding LGBTQ+ experiences, can be difficult to preserve; however, the heroic efforts of oral history projects with elders and young people alike can preserve these stories.
Expanding Horizons is committed to addressing these challenges and preserving and spreading LGBTQ+ history for generations living now and in the future. By creating and curating exhibits that highlight the diverse experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals, we aim to educate the public and spark important conversations.
