Content Guidance for Educators & Hosts

Our exhibits are designed for public display and are appropriate for a wide range of audiences. Some contain discussions of systemic violence, state-sponsored persecution, and historical trauma. We provide these notes to ensure a safe, inclusive, and prepared learning environment.

A Note on Historical Language

Our exhibits aim for an 8th-grade reading level and avoid gratuitous or graphic descriptions. However, they do accurately reflect historical realities. When primary source quotes are used, they may reflect the "period-typical" language of the era to provide an authentic window into the lived experiences of the time.

Details for each exhibit

Stonweall Inn

  • 12+ (Middle & High School)

  • Discussions of police harassment, civil unrest/riots, and systemic legal discrimination.

  • This exhibit focuses on the shift from victimhood to agency. While it mentions the violence of the raids, the emphasis is on community resistance and the birth of the modern Pride movement.

Blossom & Wilt

  • 14+ (High School Recommended)

  • Significant discussion of Nazi persecution, the Holocaust, state-sponsored violence, and the destruction of intellectual property.

  • This is our most emotionally "heavy" exhibit. It aligns closely with World History and Holocaust Education standards. We recommend this for students who have a foundational understanding of WWII history.

    The panel titled "Nazi Punks, Fxxx Off!" addresses anti-fascist resistance. To accommodate different school board policies and public venue guidelines, an alternative, retitled version of this panel is available so host organizations can select the option that best fits their community standard.

Decolonizing Queerness

  • 12+ (Middle & High School)

  • References to colonial violence, cultural erasure, and the imposition of Western religious/social norms on Indigenous peoples.

  • This exhibit offers an excellent opportunity to discuss how "history is written by the victors" and explores the resilience of Indigenous knowledge systems.

Flyover Country

  • 10+ (General Audience)

  • Brief mentions of social exclusion, discrimination in rural areas, and stereotyping.

  • This exhibit is highly accessible and focuses on local pride and community building. It is an excellent "entry point" exhibit for younger students and in rural communities.

  • 10+ (General Audience)

  • Discussions of professional erasure, institutional barriers, and the historical "closeting" of scientific figures.

  • This exhibit is empowering and achievement-oriented. It highlights the persistence of LGBTQ+ innovators despite systemic hurdles and is ideal for STEM-focused programming.

Through Science to Justice

The Power Here Is You

  • 14+ (High School Recommended); 12+ with host discretion using censored options

  • Discussions of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, illness and grief, government inaction/systemic neglect, and historical homophobic slurs (in uncensored version).

  • This exhibit focuses on civic engagement, mutual aid, and how a local community mobilized to care for its own during a devastating public health crisis. It offers strong connections to modern public health and government/civics standards.

    Primary Source Language Note: One panel includes a historic primary source quotation that contains the “F-slur.” To support varied educational environments and administrative guidelines, a censored alternative panel is available for this section so host organizations can select the version that best fits their setting.
